Serve IT

The Serve IT nonprofit clinic offers students an opportunity to receive credit for I489 through a credit-based course that provides real-world projects or service for real clients from the local nonprofit community. Students are placed in teams according to interest and skill, can return semester after semester, building a portfolio that demonstrates both skill and civic-mindedness through service.

Capstone students lead teams to work on projects that provide for the tech related needs of local nonprofits, such as website or database design and development, security, digital accessibility, computer refurbishing, or teaching tech lessons to youth in afterschool clubs.

Eligibility & Application

Prerequisites

  • Completion of application found on Serve IT website.
  • Completion of 3 credits of INFO I389 within the clinic.
  • Be in good standing with the University and via prior credits within the clinic.
  • Must complete all core courses.
    • Students can have either I211 or I308 remaining, but the course must be taken as a corequisite with the first three credits of I489.

Application Process

Students apply to get into INFO I389 through a form on our website. As long as the student remains in good standing during their time in I389 and finishes their hours, they will remain eligible to do their Capstone project with Serve IT through INFO I489. Students are sent a form to indicate their interest in returning to complete the capstone requirement in the clinic. This form and previous evaluations will be used to determine eligibility.

Students who have taken a break between I389 and the capstone experience should fill out the regular form online by the deadline date, indicating that they have worked with our clinic in the past.

Deadlines are often extended, so check the application for specifics. Apply early for best chances. The application is generally live within a week of the semester prior.
